The home was built 1999 in a lodge style. It is 500 m2 (5382 square feet) in size with 2 stories and has a standing seam metal roof with massive gutter system. It appears to be just made of wood inside and out, but the walls are actually 5 layers thick. The sequence of layers from the inside to the outside is wood, insulation, steel, masonry, wood. Because of the construction method, the building was able to experience an earthquake stronger than 7.0 on the Richter scale without sustaining any damage whatsoever. Adjoining the house is covered parking for seven vehicles.
Although this home appears simple and unpretentious in style, the attention paid to every detail is extravagant. Many of the exotic woods used in the home are now restricted and no longer obtainable. The interior walls are made of Pochote wood and the floors of Nispero and Almendrado, very hard woods native to Costa Rica. The ceilings are white pine cut from the property and are stained off-white.
First Floor: One enters the house through a foyer and the first visual treat is a beautiful Pochote wood spiral staircase. In the hallway to the left are three bedrooms, each of 20 m2 (215 sq ft) and each with its own large bathroom and wall of built-in cupboards and closets. Also on that side of the main floor is a guest bathroom, laundry with commercial machines, large pantry, and wine cellar. The public area of the house has an open plan and includes a large living room with a cozy section for sitting by the big stone fireplace in the evening. The dining area overlooks the breathtaking view and there is a clever sunken kitchen that lets the cook converse with guests at the surrounding bar made out of a single piece of Costa Rican Cioba wood. From the rest of the living area you only see the bar, not what is going on below. The kitchen has top of the line appliances, as one would expect.
Second Floor: The owner’s suite takes up this entire floor, which is laid out in the shape of a star. The Master bedroom is 50 m2 (538 square feet), with a fireplace, sitting area and a balcony to enjoy the view of San Jose and the Pacific Ocean. Next to the Master Bedroom is a large room for clothing and shoes with “His and Hers” sections. The Master Bath is roomy with separate vanities, a Jacuzzi, shower, bidet and a marvelous view. The other part of the “star” is a study opposite the Master Bedroom and equal in size. It has a sitting area, flat screen TV, built in desks and bookshelves.
Terrace: A large wood terrace of 250 m2 (2691 square feet) with a “Rancho” (covered Bar and Barbeque area) is directly connected to the main house. The terrace could easily accommodate 300 people and enjoys the same spectacular view as the house. Here again, the owners thought of everything: there are steel “arms” attached to the terrace to support awnings so a party can continue even if it rains.
Gymnasium: The gymnasium is located underneath the terrace and has with it a refreshment area, bath and changing room. An additional room there, currently fitted as a bedroom, could easily become an office. There is a volley ball court and also a roofed Jacuzzi next to the gym to enjoy the view and the water in any kind of weather.
